Hlaing Sein was born and brought up under dictatorship in Burma. She took part in the democracy uprising in 1988 which was brutally put down by the regime, with more than 3,000 people killed. She herself narrowly escaped with her life when soldiers opened fire on her house. She is now living in exile in the UK, unable to return home. Hlaing Sein is a Campaigns Officer at Burma Campaign UK, where she works to raise awareness about the situation in her country and pressure the international community to take action.
