Thérèse Murphy has served for the past 4 years as chairperson of the National Women’s Council of Ireland. The NWCI is the national co-ordination, a membership based organisation with 165 affiliates representing some 300,000 women in Ireland.

Her background is as an Equality Officer in the Trade Union movement. For the past 9 years she has worked at a national and European level to bring about the implementation of the EU Equality Directives on Employment, Race, and Gender Equality in Ireland. As Chairperson of NWCI she worked closely with the Equality Authority of Ireland and the Irish Governmental Departments responsible for implementing gender equality in Ireland.


She is active also in the area of equality of education serving as the Cathaoirleach/ Chairperson of the board of management of a Primary School and a Second Level School in Dublin. She is currently the Vice Chairperson of the Women’s Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU). She works full time in an Electricity Utility and is seconded on an ad hoc basis for Trade Union activities. She has recently been appointed by the Minster of Justice, Equality and Law Reform to the Board of the Equality Authority which is for a four year term of office.

 

She has served two terms on the Board of the EWL, the last two years as Executive Board member and has represented EWL in the areas of Employment and Economic Independence on many occasions.
